Harbour Planting
Newhaven
Commissioned by a section of Newhaven’s harborside properties to redesign a resilient planting scheme for the communal areas. Facing occasional flooding with sea water, the existing grass and hedging were proving ineffective against these challenging conditions.
In the face of sea water flooding, the planting options were limited, requiring careful choices for durability and aesthetic appeal. The most affected areas now include leymus grass, rosa rugosa, tamarisk, cordyline, and yucca. Leymus, known for its invasive nature, has been incorporated the island bed alongside trees and yuccas, proving highly successful in this setting.
On slightly elevated grounds, escaping the direct impact of flooding, allows for a vibrant coastal planting mix. Featuring nepetas, helichrysums, santolinas, and stipas, this area adds a burst of color and diversity.
The garden has flooded a few times now and the capture the progress of the planting a year later.
